Totally Freaked Out
My husband wants to vote for Ron Paul and this freaks the shit out of me. I am not a political animal, and this is not a political blog. But I cannot sit still and not lose my shit when my husband is willing to support a candidate that is staunchly pro-life. Even if everything else about Ron Paul is fucking rainbows and unicorns, I cannot back someone that would happily take my freedom to choose away from me. In a 2001 writing, Ron Paul states, "As a pro-life obstetrician-gynecologist, I am steadfastly opposed to abortion." (Source) I love babies. I love babies even when they are little bitty bits of fluff with nicknames like "blasty" because eventually they will turn into full-fledged human beings. But sometimes people find themselves in fucked situations and we NEED to have the ability to choose whether or not to continue a pregnancy. I have posted on this topic before, and my feelings and background have not changed. Yes, I got unexpectedly pregnant with my first child before I was 21. Yes, I could have had an abortion but I CHOSE not to have one. Yes, giving up my son for adoption sucked more than anything before or since that day. But I had a choice and I want to always have that choice. I cannot and will not vote for someone that would take that from me. Nope. Not ever.

I could go on and on and on about this, but hey look, someone else already did: go and read "When Abortion Was A Crime" and see how many women (who used to be blastocysts!) died because of the political invading their bodies. I personally don't think I could bring myself to have an abortion, but that is my choice for me and is by no means what I think everyone should do. Despite my husband and me both being surgically sterile, it could happen, and I have been told I have less than a 50% chance of getting another one to viability. So should I, with my lousy joints and my preterm labor issues, and my bleeding disorder, and my accursed alleles that would--WOULD--doom any further children of mine to the same suffering and limitations of quality and quantity of life, be forced to risk my very life if I somehow managed to get pregnant anyway? Should my three pre-existing children with their various special needs for which I am the sole coordinator in charge be abandoned in the lurch because the current political climate demands that a non-viable fetus take precedence over their mother's life and health and continued ability to care for them? Fuck Ron Paul and the horse he rode in on. With all appropriate birth control, naturally, because that is fail-proof, righth? Or should he and his horse abstain? Either way, they can both trot straight on off to hell if you ask me.
Sam, I think we need to look at all of the issues and ethics before deciding. But pro-life is a mark against a candidate for me, too.
Sam: Amen to that!!!
Adoption is not the only solution, there are already plenty of kids in foster homes etc.
Give women a choice dammit!!!
I TOTALLY agree with you on this..... Who is the Gov to say what you can and can not do with your body.
Like you I COULD NEVER make that choice but lots of people have no other choice....
Wow this must be up for some heated arguments at your house
Random Musings - I imagine this goes either way - either heated debate, or stone cold silence with a hint of couch or dog house. At least at first.
After all, we all know that even a bozo that is dead wrong, stupid, and ignorant, too, is still the same bozo that cuddles oh-so-occasionally.
Every once in a while the heated topics boil over, and we come to agreement, or agree to let the question lie quietly. With a hint of *grr*.
Sam,
Have you been by Dating Dummy, who is now single dating dummy???
Jeremy
Just for the record: Ron Paul does believe "As a pro-life obstetrician-gynecologist, I am steadfastly opposed to abortion" but he has also stated that he does not "begin to believe how to tell women how to live their before(in Slate 7-9-2007?, Newsweek, and Time) that women should always have the choice but if you were to ask him he would always strongly recommend having the baby.
His website states he is not in favor of a congressional law favoring pro choice. That could just be a political move, but it seems different than saying you dont have a choice.
I am NOT saying he is pro choice or pro life. Simply stating he think about it.
I will say this:
He put pressure on the Texas legislature to devote a large portion of its tobacco settlement to cancer research, and education (and lord KNOWS we need more funds for teacher!!!!!!). Due to this MD Anderson Cancer center is close to a perscription pill that targets tumors.
Here is my VERY long winded point:
Life is never black or white. It is always gray, and I hope you base your judgement on more than one single issue.
DAMMIT
That was supposed to say
"begin to believe how to tell women how to live their lives"
I SO TOTALLY AGREE with you Sam!!!!! I am pro-choice too. I don't feel the government has any business telling any woman what they can or can not do with their bodies!!!!
AMEN!!!
ok, i am republican, and even *I* cannot vote for this guy.
did you tell TB that ron paul is AGAINST vaccines? yeah. i read one of his little flyers the other day. that alone was enough for me to say, "um...i'm not voting for this guy"
