Teach Me

The discussion board in one of my classes is going to drive me bat shit crazy(er). Although I readily admit that my spelling and grammar skills are not perfect, there are a few things that I do know. One of those things is that the following sentence contains an error.

"I am a mom and a very active PTA and school volunteer which put’s me in the elementary school setting a lot."

Now, Google's spell check tells me that there are at LEAST two things wrong on this post thus far. One, the use of crazy(er) to convey the message that I am already crazy and this board is going to make me even more insane is not proper form. However, this is a blog. A personal, informal blog and not a graded part of my college education in pursuit of a teaching credential. The second blinding error which helps the crazies (used here as a adjective and not a noun) is the use of the word put's. Now, is put's a possessive or contraction or abbreviation? Let's explore the possibilities:
  1. Put is a person that owns "me" in the sentence.
  2. It is a contraction of the words "put" and "has"
  3. It is a contraction of the words "put" and "is"
  4. It is an abbreviation standing for "put me out of my fucking misery because what the fuck kind of word is put's?"
Holy fuck I am in for a fantastic semester.

Ha. Good luck with not kicking your classmates in the head - because I would totally be tempted to do so many times a day.

Sam,

It could be worse. At a US Navy school in Millington, TN, I kept finding mis-spelled words, incorrect explanations, and unanswerable questions in a self-paced electronics course. The third time I reported an error in the material, I was chewed out for not paying attention to the course.

In the case of ephemeral communications, such as notes passed under the desk, and forum posts, there is less focus on spelling, grammar, correctness, ant truth. The fact that everyone *seeing* a mistake is more likely to then repeat it in their own lives and work is unfortunate.

Try this. Next time you see a mistake, think 'La! that was a mistake.' That way you reinforce your understanding that the material does contain an error, and helps you avoid learning to repeat the silly thing. The other part is the 'La!'. You can express most emotions often associated with cuss words using 'la!', from disgust to chagrin to hatred. Only, the work 'la' is simple to form - it doesn't distract your own thinking the way finding just the right combination of vile words to reflect how vile the vile offender really is - you get off topic, and spend a lot of energy on cuss words, and less on what you meant to say. 'La!' (pronounced 'lah' as in Julie-Frickin-Andrew's song from 'Sound of Music', 'Do Re Mi (Fa So La Ti Do)'. 'La' won't burn ears, or send little children crying for a nap. And it sometimes just plain confuses the crap out of some expecting to see the air turn blue.
