Great Idea
Chicken: Mommy, if Dooce is so popular and everything why doesn't she use her blog to make money? She could put ads on it and make money from it.
Sam: She already does, baby. That's her job now, even her husband stays home.
Chicken: I think I'm going to start blogging again. That way, by the time I'm done with college I will have been blogging for years and I'll be really popular and if I can't get a job right after college I can use my blog to make money.
On the surface, one may think "That's a pretty smart 4th grader." Which is totally true. However, I had a couple of other thoughts. The first was his grasp of the Internet and advertising as a way to make money. The second was how our world has changed, where a child of nine knows that even a college degree doesn't guarantee a decent job. Remember when a high school education was enough to buy the American dream?

Chicken is a pretty smart kid-- and realistic. I hope successful for him.
Its taken some of my friends 20-ish years to get that kinda insight. And by "my friends" I mean me. :)
Wow, I'm not that old, but when I was his age, the internet was still in it's infancy... something my mom saw demonstrated in her graduate class. My, how the world has changed.
yeah, that was $20 k borrowed for nothing. it got me a job that paid me $12 k per year. gee, thanks. i made more money waiting tables BEFORE i got my diploma. sheesh. what is wrong with this country, anyway?
that's why i went to grad school. now i'm ok. but i'll never be making bank as a librarian, that's for sure. maybe i'll go be an auto mechanic. they get paid six digit salaries sometimes. WOW.
Chicken is smart. It is sad that a college education doesn't guarantee a good job, or a job at all. And if you only have a high school degree, you'd better know someone to even get a halfway decent job.
My mom had only a high school diploma and a few college classes, not a degree, and she got a job as a senoir secretary at a large University making what was then fairly good wages. That doesn't happen anymore. In todays world, she'd be working at Walmart.
I find it both tasteless and hilarious that the first response to your post is someone advertising something-I-didn't-bother-to-check-because-I-loath-advertisements.
Indeed our world is not like how it was when we were fumbling through immaturity. I want my innocence back dammit!
That boy is one smart chicken! If he finds out a way for all of us to make money blogging, tell him to let us know. I would like to quit my "job" and do this that I love full time.
I've always said that Chicken is one wise... well... Chicken.
He certainly is a smart guy. I'm still trying to figure out what I am going to do. And internet ads are sounding a little better every day.
I HAD A LEMONADE STAND IN 4TH GRade!!! and i'm drunk!
